Here are the stages of your next Christmas event:

1. Reception and ticket office

In Piazza XXIV Maggio you will also find a refreshment point with hot drinks and toilets.

3. The large Nativity scene and the climb to the Village

The little trains will take you to the start of the trail to the Village and the Grotto. In the splendid Church of the Guardia (a FAI favorite)—with an incredible view—a new, large nativity scene (6 x 2 meters) of the Bergamo school, complete with day-night, water, and snow effects.

Even using the Reindeer Express trains from the Chiesa della Guardia, you can walk for about 600 meters (there's also a paved path suitable for strollers). The Chiesa della Guardia is a covered area, and there are restrooms outside.

4th Art Exhibition "Between Heaven and Earth"

In addition to the large nativity scene, the Chiesa della Guardia also hosts a new exhibition by Michela Mirici Cappa's "Bottega dell'arte," featuring paintings by her students and teacher.

Once you reach the Village area, you can stay as long as you like or even return multiple times. For example, you can do just a few activities or have lunch, then climb up to the Grotto, and then descend back to the Village areas to do the other activities. The activities are close together, so there's no mandatory route or predefined order: only entry to the Grotto must occur at the booked time, not necessarily at the beginning or end of the day.

Access is permitted only to participants; it is not possible to enter the Village without a ticket.

5. The Castle of Lights with Disney film concerts

A Fairytale Christmas – Concert with Disney Movie Songs

As soon as you enter the Village, you'll find the new 2025 installation, the Castle of Lights, with a magical concert that will make both adults and children dream, with the live voices of the princesses and the most beloved Christmas melodies from Disney films.

The concert is already included in the Grotta ticket, with repeat performances at 11:30 am - 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm on all opening dates!

6. Christmas Show with the Cave Elves

Also at the entrance to the Village, the famous Elves of Santa's Grotto await you: every year, a new Christmas Show, thrilling and engaging adults and children alike. Don't miss it!

The Family Musical is already included in the Grotta ticket, with performances at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm on all opening dates!

7. The Toy Factory and the Craft Elves

In the Village, a large covered and heated area is dedicated to the toy machine and our artisans: here you and your children can discover the art of wood, cheese, honey, crochet and patchwork.

This area of the Village is covered, heated, and also connected to the self-service refreshment area featuring local products and the new Burger & Chips area. Restrooms are available outside this facility.

8.This is how cheese is born: the curd

In the covered and heated area of the Factory and the Artisan Elves, you can watch the cheese curdling, if you like. All dates are at 1:30 PM and 2:45 PM.

This experience is repeated on all dates at 1.00pm and 2.45pm.

9. The Good Child Diploma

In the covered and heated area of the Factory and the Artisans you can collect - if you deserve it - the Good Boy and Good Girl Diploma.

This area of the Village is covered, heated and also connected to the refreshment area.

10. Mechanical reindeer to ride

From the Toy Factory, still connected to the indoor and heated area, you'll reach the area dedicated to the mechanical reindeer, which you can ride. Continue from this area and you'll reach the Locanda Alpina refreshment point.

Optional activity not included in the admission ticket. Purchase on site: €3.00; 2 tours: €5.00.

11. Self-service and new Burger & Chips area

From the Reindeer Area, with a covered connection, or directly from outside the Village, near Santa's Flying Sleigh, you can stop at the Locanda Alpina, offering self-service, a bar, and a mountain menu. There's also a packed lunch area and a new Burger & Chips area for those who prefer a quick meal. There's also an indoor heated nursery for diaper changes.

Refreshment area and bar open all day - lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Reservations are not required. Restrooms are available outside the building.

12. Selfie point - Santa's sleigh

A new location for an unforgettable memory: a selfie in Santa's real sleigh, made even more magical by augmented reality effects. Free and without the need to download an app, all you need is an internet connection.

13.The underground tunnel

Before walking the final stretch of the trail to the Grotto, you can explore the secret passageway of the Twergi, the elves of Ornavasso, with their new elf selfie booths. Take your souvenir photo in the underground passageway. The passageway opens right at the foot of the Twergi Viewpoint.

14. The Twergi Belvedere with reindeer rides

The village offers a panoramic view of Lake Mergozzo and the mountains of the Valgrande National Park. Here, children can ride wooden reindeer while adults admire the enchanting view of the lakes.

You can reach the Belvedere by walking through the underground tunnel or from the outside, next to Santa's Flying Sleigh.

15.The Talking Trees

Our talking trees are much loved by children: the Tree of Time, with the story of the Twergi forest, and the Toy Tree, which tells the story of how Christmas baubles were created.

The Tree of Time is located at the entrance to the Elf Factory, the Toy Tree, at the foot of the Twergi Viewpoint, right behind Santa's Flying Sleigh.

16. Santa's Flying Sleigh

Guaranteed fun and panoramic views with Santa's Flying Sleigh, a unique attraction for all ages, from babies to adults.

Optional activity not managed by Santa's Grotto. Purchase on-site for €3.00 (four tickets for €10), with no age or height restrictions, and accompanied by an accompanying adult.

17.The Twergi Forest: towards the Cave

In the Village you will find the talking houses of the elves, then take the path uphill to the cave and walk the last stretch of the path to reach the Cave: in the woods you will also encounter new installations and photo points

The trail is approximately 400 meters long and winds through the woods. You can leave your stroller at the start of the trail in the designated parking area, or if you have difficulty navigating the trail, skip this area and take the alternative route on the paved road.

18.The falcon elves

At the end of the Twergi Forest trail you will find the falconry post.

The possible photo-baptism of the glove is an optional activity not managed by Santa's Grotto

19. Arrival at the cave entrance

Congratulations, you've reached the entrance to the Cave. Here you'll be welcomed by our elves, the hot tea offered to visitors (included in the ticket), and the elves responsible for handing out the protective helmets for entry into the Cave. We recommend respecting your reserved time slot for entry to the Cave; arriving a few minutes early is sufficient to avoid unnecessary waiting.

20. The Magical Encounter with Santa Claus

Walk through the 200-meter underground tunnel, filled with Christmas music and installations, and enjoy the incredible spectacle of the 30-meter-high Marble Hall (also used for Milan Cathedral). Santa Claus awaits you in the center. Post your letter. Santa will give each child a small gift.

The event photographer will take a souvenir photo. A complimentary print of the family photo is included. Any portraits, files, or other products can be purchased at the exit.

21.L'elfo Click

At the exit of Santa's Grotto, you'll find the photographer's wooden house: your complimentary family photo print is ready to go.

  • How long does the trip to the cave last?

The time booked online refers to the entrance to the Grotto to meet Santa Claus. To allow time to climb up from the center of Ornavasso to the Grotto, you must arrive in Ornavasso in Piazza XXIV Maggio, where the ticket office is located, at least 45 minutes—1 hour—before your booked time if you're taking the trains. If you're walking up, you'll need to allow an additional 45 minutes. To visit the various areas of the Village Grotto, allow at least 3 hours for the tour ( time for lunch). If you'd also like to visit the Thousand Nativity Scenes exhibition, we recommend allowing at least an extra hour. The motorboats depart from Baveno (15 minutes from Ornavasso—heading for Milan, Baveno exit) starting at 5:30 PM; return is at your own pace. • How does the day work?

Santa's Grotto is a nature hike that starts from Piazza XXIV Maggio (200 meters above sea level) in Ornavasso and reaches the entrance to Santa's Grotto (400 meters above sea level). CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE 2025 MAP. Appropriate clothing for the natural outdoor environment is recommended during the winter. From the free parking areas indicated on site in Ornavasso, you can reach Piazza XXIV Maggio in the center of Ornavasso, where you can pick up your online-booked passes. From here, if you wish, you can take the tourist trains to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia, where the path to the Grotto begins. It is essential to arrive in Piazza XXIV Maggio at least 45 minutes to 1 hour before the time booked online for entry to the Grotto, because from the square you must climb towards the Elf Village and then towards the Grotto. The trail is not suitable for strollers; a backpack or baby carrier is recommended for infants. There's also an alternative paved route of about 600 meters for strollers, but this route bypasses the Twergi, Santa's gnomes. At the arrival of the trains at the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia, you'll also find the area with the large nativity scene and the art exhibition. From the arrival of the trains, a climb of about 300 meters leads to the Twergi Forest (our elves). At the entrance to the forest, you'll find the Locanda Alpina (covered and heated bar and restaurant, also featuring a packed lunch area and a Burger & Chips area for quick refreshments), the Twergi underground tunnel, the Castle of Lights with a concert of Disney hit songs, and our elves' station, with the Christmas Family Show and Santa's Flying Sleigh (optional attraction not included in the ticket). Behind the flying sleigh, you'll find the Belvedere dei Twergi lookout point with wooden reindeer and talking trees. In the nearby covered area, you'll find the Artisan Elves Factory (wood, cheese, apples and jams, patchwork, crochet), the toy factory, the Good Boy and Good Girl diploma collection point, and electric reindeer rides (this attraction is optional). The heated indoor entertainment and refreshment areas have been connected, providing a vast covered area of approximately 1,000 square meters, heated for all weather conditions. From the Village, the second section of the forest trail (about 400 meters uphill) with Twergi-themed installations leads to the entrance to Santa's Grotto, an underground cave with a tunnel access approximately 200 meters long (the tunnel is approximately 2 meters wide and 2.5 meters high). The Grotto is accessible at your reserved time (just arrive a few minutes early to avoid unnecessary waiting). The visit inside the Grotto, including the meeting with Santa Claus, lasts about 15 minutes. It is mandatory to wear the protective helmet provided at the entrance. Upon exiting, you can collect a printed family photo (not individual portraits) free with the ticket. The total duration of the trip is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, including any breaks for refreshments or a packed lunch. You can stay in the Village areas as long as you like, or even return multiple times. For example, you can enjoy some activities, then climb up to the Grotto, and then stay in the Village areas again as often as you like. From Santa's Grotto, you can continue to the Boden Sanctuary, where you can visit the Crypt with a Thousand Nativity Scenes from Around the World (an optional shuttle service is also available, not included in the ticket). On the way back (or on the weekend if you're staying in the area), you can stop in Baveno (a 20-minute drive from Ornavasso) for the Christmas Motorboats to Isola Pescatori, which can be booked on our website.

  • Strollers and disabled people

The event is designed for families and is therefore accessible with strollers. If ascending by train, strollers must be folded. The "Bosco dei Twergi" section (approximately 400 meters) is not accessible with strollers. You can leave them at the beginning of the trail in the designated stroller parking area, use a child's backpack, or skip this area and take the alternative route on asphalt, exiting the village area and ascending along the asphalt road. People with disabilities: Unfortunately, the event is not accessible to people with disabilities or certified disabilities, including non-motor disabilities. If you have a disability or other disabilities, please note that Santa's Grotto is a nature hike; even using the trains, you will still need to walk some sections through the woods. Participants are responsible for ensuring that they and their family members are fit to undertake a hike during the winter.

  • Dog friendly

Dogs are welcome (even on the trains), provided they are well-behaved and properly supervised by their humans, as the areas are crowded, especially with children. Larger dogs in the more crowded areas must follow the instructions of staff.

  • How trains work

The stretch from Piazza XXIV Maggio to the entrance to Santa's Grotto (about 1.3 km) can be explored on tourist trains, which run from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the event. A return ticket costs €5.00 for adults and €3.00 for children (the ticket is valid for one day and can be purchased directly at the train departure point in Piazza XXIV Maggio). Reservations are not required, as trains run continuously. Even using the trains, you still have to walk about 600 meters from the arrival station, so wear suitable footwear.

  • Where can I eat?

Along the Twergi Trail, about 200 meters from the cave entrance, you'll find the Alpine Tavern, offering local dishes (polenta and dishes from the Ossola valleys) and packed lunches. Reservations are not possible. Starting in 2025, the Inn will also offer a self-service restaurant and a Burger & Chips area for quick meals. Reservations are recommended for lunch at restaurants in Ornavasso.

  • Where can I stay for the weekend?

Accommodation in Ornavasso is very limited; you can find hotel and non-hotel accommodation in nearby towns, particularly Verbania, Baveno, Stresa, and Omegna.

  • Clothing, covered areas, bad weather

Santa's Grotto is a nature excursion; even with the trains, you still need to walk about 600 meters there and another 600 meters back. Therefore, clothing appropriate for a winter outdoor excursion is required—we're at a low altitude, between 200 and 500 meters above sea level. However, hiking boots, a windbreaker for rain or snow, a hat, and gloves are still required. Several interconnected, covered, heated areas are available (indicated in the program) for both activities and lunch. Restrooms are in containers (the Locanda Alpina has a heated nursery for diaper changes; please use that). The internal temperature of the underground grotto (a 200-meter-long tunnel) is constant (8 degrees Celsius). The event normally takes place in all weather conditions; in exceptional circumstances, the organizers may cancel the event with 48 hours' notice, sent via email or text message to the address provided during booking. You can reschedule your cancelled date based on availability, or request a voucher of the same value valid for 12 months for all events organized by Santa's Grotto throughout the year.

To enter the Grotto, you must go to the Ticket Office in Piazza XXIV Maggio in Ornavasso.
